Portishead beach

PORTISHEAD is a coastal town on the Severn Estuary – but is the beach worth a visit?

For beach goers that want a relaxing day on a bed of golden sand, this one might not be for you.

Is Portishead beach?

The beach, situated on the north Somerset coast, is also known as Kilkenny Bay or Woodhill Bay.

It is near to Bristol, but this beach does not get as busy during the summer months as you’d expect.

That is because it is an estuary beach – meaning there is not much sand.

Instead, it is mainly made up of mud and rocks.

Portishead Beach has stunning views across to the south coast of Wales

This does not often appeal to your everyday beach goer, but it’s a peaceful spot with stunning views.

On a clear day, you can see right across to the south Wales coast.

Can you park at Portishead beach?

For those travelling to Portishead beach, there is a car park on site.

There are also public toilets at the car park – which we know comes in handy after a long journey to the coast.

If the car park is full, there are plenty of nearby roads that allow parking for the day.

What else can you do in Portishead?

If the beach does not tickle your fancy, perhaps The Portishead Lake Grounds will.

This is a great place to visit with the family that is built around a 100-year-old artificial lake.

There is plenty of room for games as well as a children’s playground, tennis courts and a bowls green.

Rowing boats are also available to take on the lake during the summer months.

As well as that, Parish Wharf Leisure Centre is nearby.

This has swimming, badminton, indoor games and even a toddler room.

There are lots of cafes and shops in the local area if you fancy a bite to eat while exploring Portishead.

If you are looking to stay in Portishead for the night, there are plenty of hotels nearby.

For a cheaper option, you could book yourself into the Ibis Budget hotel on the marina.

Alternatively, The Poacher hotel in Portishead is renowned for its great food menu and plush rooms.
