Is Hastings Beach dog friendly?

HASTINGS has everything you need for a great day out from mini golf and fishing trips to the famous Flamingo Amusements.

The beach, which is a mix of sand and shingle, is another attraction in the area – but can you take your four-legged friend with you?

Is Hastings beach dog friendly?

You can take your dog with you to Hastings beach as it dog friendly.

However, there are two parts of the beach where you cannot take a dog between 1 May and 30 September.

These are between the Harbour Arm and the Pier and between Warrior Square and the Royal Victoria Hotel.

Hastings council also state that dogs are required to be kept on a lead in the area when on roads, pavements, footways and verges.

Dogs are banned from certain areas of Hastings beach during the summer months

There are plenty of dog-friendly cafes and restaurants in the area if you fancy a bite to eat during your trip to the seaside.

A lot of the hotels in the area are dog-friendly including the plush Royal Victoria Hotel which has over 50 bedrooms.

Dogs are allowed everywhere except from the restaurants and they are charged at £10 per night, per room.

Are dogs allowed on Hastings pier?

Yes – but they must remain on a lead at all times.

Well-behaved dogs are allowed on the pier decking – but only if there is not an event taking place at the time.

Dogs are not allowed inside the buildings, food areas or on the Upper Deck.

Guide dogs are exempt from these rules – of course.

The pier is a great place to take your pooch – and you can even treat them to some doggy ice cream from Hastings Pier Ice Cream Parlour.

It costs just £2 and is bound to cool your dog down on a hot day.

Dogs are also allowed in Hasting’s famous Bier Garden – which has over 600 seats.

Why are dogs banned from going onto beaches?

The main reason for not allowing dogs on to beaches at certain times is for health and safety purposes.

Although most owners will clean up after their pets when they are out, some fail to pick up their dog’s poo.

Due to a dog’s diet being largely meat-based, leaving their faeces on the beach runs the risk of humans contracting toxocariasis – or zoonosis.

And during the busy months, this becomes even more dangerous – especially for children – with potential problems including blindness and breathing difficulties.

Things to consider when taking your dog to the beach

Dogs love a nice trip to the seaside, just like their human companions.

But there are a number of rules and tips to consider when heading to the beach.

These include:

  • Check with beach management to see if dogs are allowed
  • Take poo bags to clear up their mess
  • Bring a lead – dogs have to be on a leash on some beaches at all times
  • Avoid the big crowds
  • Consider some people may not like dogs
  • Take plenty of fresh water and a bowl for your dog
  • Take a first aid kit in case your dog becomes injured
  • Check for local vets in case of emergency
  • Make sure your dog is wearing their collar and ID tag
  • If they are wear a GPS tracker, make sure it is fully charged
  • Take spare towels to dry them
  • Keep an eye on your dog at all times
