Barry Island Beach

THE first thing that comes to mind when you hear Barry Island is probably BBC TV series Gavin and Stacey.

You might not bump into Bryn on the promenade, but there’s plenty to do in the area for all of the family.

Is Barry Island beach worth visiting?

Whitmore Bay is by far the biggest and most popular attraction on Barry Island.

This hotspot in South Wales has a recently refurbished seafront which means everything you need is nearby.

The long list of facilities include a number of cafes, restaurants, fish and chip shops and even amusement arcades.

If you need to escape the summer sun, you can hire one of the multi-coloured beach huts on the seafront for the day.

There are a total of 24 huts situated on the eastern promenade near the climbing wall.

You can hire a small hut, which comes electricity sockets, for a full day for £19.60 or a half day for £11.90.

Alternatively, a large hut with running water will set you back £33.50 for a full day or £17 for a half day.

This golden sandy beach has good accessibility and you can hire wheelchairs from the seafront.

And there’s plenty of things to do on Barry Island to keep your children amused.

There is a climbing wall, mist feature, adventure golf and of course, the incredible Pleasure Park.

Pleasure Park has over 17 rides and attractions including classics such as The Waltzer and The Cup & Saucer.

Entry is free, but you will have to buy tokes to board the rides.

As there’s so much to do in the area, you might want to stay the night on Barry Island to make the most of your trip.

Why not check out the luxurious Mount Rooms Hotel, which is just 0.4 miles away from the beachfront.

Is Barry Island beach dog friendly?

Pets are allowed on Whitmore Bay – but there are restrictions in place during peak season.

Dogs are banned from the beach from May until the end of September.

The main reason for not allowing dogs on to beaches at certain times is for health and safety purposes

Although most owners will clean up after their pets when they are out, some fail to pick up their dog’s poo.

Due to a dog’s diet being largely meat-based, leaving their faeces on the beach runs the risk of humans contracting toxocariasis – or zoonosis.

And during the busy months, this becomes even more dangerous – especially for children – with potential problems including blindness and breathing difficulties.

Can you swim at Barry Island beach?

Whitmore Bay, which is an award-winning beach, has golden sand and crystal clear water.

You can swim in the sea, but visitors are urged to be extra careful due to the strong currents.

Lifeguards will be on patrol during peak season to keep an eye on everyone that is in the sea.

Children should always be accompanied by an adult when in the water.
