Portobello Beach

IF you’re in Scotland and fancy a trip to the beach – look no further. 

Just a few miles from Edinburgh city centre, you will find the famous Portobello beach. 

Is Portobello beach worth visiting? 

You might recognise this beach from international volleyball competitions or even triathlon events. 

It is also used to host the annual Big Beach Busk – which is a firm favourite with the locals and tourists.

The Portobello Kayaking and Sailing club is based here as well as local rowing club RowPorty. 

With over two miles of golden sand, it’s no surprise that Portobello has won The Seaside Award.

This beach is perfect for swimming and sunbathing – but be warned it can get busy during the summer months. 

Visitors can catch a bus to the beach from the city centre and roadside parking is available. 

The nearest railway station to the beach is called Brunstane – which is around a 10 minute walk away. 

In short, Portobello must be on your to-do list. 

Why is Portobello beach famous? 

Back in 1901, Portobello baths were opened on the Promenade.

This is now known as Portobello Swim Centre and it has one of only three Turkish baths in Scotland.

Portobello Promenade is a 2.2 mile picturesque route that is an estimated 5000 steps. 

Are dogs allowed on Portobello beach?

Dog owners will be pleased to know that their four-legged friends are allowed on the beach. 

It is dog friendly all year round and there are always plenty of pooches enjoying a swim when the tide is in. 

There are plenty of cafes and shops around the promenade where your dog will be welcome. 

Does Portobello beach have wheelchair access?

Beach Wheelchairs Portobello provided hire of beach wheelchairs – for free. 

Visitors can locate these at the storage container which is adjacent to the promenade, near to the Tumbles car park. 

Three wheelchairs are available for hire and there is a manual hoist that can be used. 

There  is a large Hippocampe wheelchair, a lightweight adult wheelchair and a Debug tilt-in-space beach wheelchair.To book, you can do so via the official Portobello Beach website.
