EXCLUSIVE: Major location decision is vital when booking your beach holiday, travel expert reveals

WHEN choosing where you want to go on holiday can be very stressful as you have to think whether you want to go to a tropical destination or icy escape.

Choosing if you should go during the summer or winter can also be a tough decision, but for those beach lovers, picking specific locations can be the difference between having an enjoyable time by the seaside or only wanting to stay away from the coast.

The Caribbean gets more than 30 million international tourists every year, making one of the most desired places to visit with its beautiful beaches, glorious sunny weather and hot temperatures.

Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Barbados make up a large chunk of those visitors, but their eastern seaboards all sit facing the Atlantic Ocean.

Libbi Roed, a travel agent otherwise known as the Gypsea Traveller and an affiliate of the Travel Experts revealed: “Seaweed is a huge consideration.

“This is mostly for the Caribbean and mostly on the Atlantic facing beaches. Usually the Caribbean facing beaches won’t have seaweed.

Seaweed season used to be similar to Hurricane season but lately it can spread throughout the year. I always choose a Caribbean Sea facing resort to not deal with seaweed.

“Nothing is worse than booking a beach vacation and arriving to the beach covered in thick smelly seaweed.”

Popular Caribbean destinations such as Turks and Caicos, The Bahamas, and St Lucia are also affected by having the Atlantic Ocean to the east, which leaves few places to visit, making it harder for travel agents like Libbi “if they want a great beach in July” to relax in the sun.

Cuba’s most popular city, Havana would also fall under this category, but Santiago de Cuba is situated on the west side of the island.

Meanwhile, Jamaica and Aruba are both surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, while Costa Rica has that to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west – making them less likely to have seaweed and a better opportunity to enjoy stink-free beaches.

Yet, the green marine algae is just one of numerous things that tourists should consider when choosing a beach holiday, with the Gypsea Traveller revealing that choosing the time of year is vital to enjoying your vacation as places like Hawaii are perfect to go to during the off season.

And if you are keen to visit the American island state, Libbi reveals: “It’s important to decide if you want your resort on the beach, as not all beaches are swimmable and not all resorts are on the beach.

“Knowing these things can help you or a travel agent find the best location for you.”
